Trenchless drain and sewer repair

Pipe Relining Sydney

Pipe relining repairs cracked, root-damaged and deteriorated drain and sewer pipes from the inside. Where pipe condition allows, it avoids excavation and provides a long-term structural repair. Drainr provides a fixed quote based on scope before any relining work begins.

What is pipe relining

How pipe relining works

Pipe relining creates a new structural pipe inside the damaged existing one, without the need to dig it up.

A flexible liner saturated with epoxy resin is inserted into the damaged pipe through an existing access point. The liner is inflated to press against the pipe walls, then cured in place using heat or UV light. Once cured, it forms a solid, seamless new pipe inside the old one with a smooth interior surface.

The process works for drain and sewer pipes in a range of diameters, including sewer lines, stormwater drains and internal drainage. Pipe relining is suitable when the damaged pipe still has a consistent shape and accessible entry points. Severely collapsed sections may require a different approach.

New pipe within the old oneThe cured liner becomes a structurally sound new pipe with a smooth interior surface that improves flow and prevents root re-entry.
No unnecessary excavationAccess is typically through existing inspection points, so driveways, gardens and landscaping are not disturbed in most cases.
Prevents further root intrusionThe seamless interior has no joints for roots to penetrate, resolving recurring root-related blockages permanently.
Long-term structural repairA quality epoxy liner has a design life of 50 or more years, making it a longer-term solution than repeated clearing for structurally compromised pipes.
Suitability

When pipe relining is the right option

Not every blocked drain needs relining. But when a drain has structural issues, pipe relining is often the smarter long-term choice.

Tree root intrusion

When roots have entered through joints or cracks and the blockage keeps returning after clearing, relining seals the entry points permanently.

Cracked or damaged pipes

Cracks, fractures and failed joints allow groundwater ingress and root entry. Relining restores structural integrity without digging.

Recurring blocked drains

If a drain keeps blocking despite regular clearing, pipe damage is often the underlying cause. Relining addresses the root of the problem.

Pipes under structures

Where pipes run under driveways, slabs, pools or landscaped areas, relining avoids the major cost and disruption of excavation and reinstatement.

Old earthenware drain pipes

Sydney has many older properties with clay and earthenware drain pipes that have deteriorated over time. Relining can extend their life significantly.

Strata and managed properties

Where minimising disruption to residents and common areas is important, the no-dig approach of relining is often preferred.

How it works

The pipe relining process

From inspection to completed repair, the process is clear at every step.

1

Inspect the pipe

We inspect the pipe to identify the damaged sections, measure pipe diameter, assess pipe condition and determine whether relining is appropriate. Findings are explained clearly before any repair is recommended.

2

Clean and prepare

The pipe is cleaned using high-pressure water jetting to remove debris, roots and buildup, preparing the surface for the liner to bond properly.

3

Insert the liner

A custom-sized liner saturated with epoxy resin is inserted through an existing access point and positioned to cover the damaged section.

4

Cure and complete

The liner is inflated against the pipe walls and cured using heat or UV light. Junctions are reinstated and a final inspection confirms the quality of the repair.

FAQ

Pipe relining FAQs

Clear answers to common pipe relining questions.

What is pipe relining?
Pipe relining is a trenchless method of repairing a damaged drain or sewer pipe from the inside. A resin-saturated liner is inserted and cured in place, creating a new structural pipe without requiring excavation in most cases.
How long does pipe relining last?
A properly installed pipe relining solution using quality epoxy resin is designed to last 50 or more years. The liner creates a seamless internal surface that resists root intrusion, corrosion and further cracking.
How much does pipe relining cost in Sydney?
Pipe relining is priced by scope after inspection. Cost depends on the length, diameter, access conditions and complexity of the repair. Drainr provides a fixed quote before any relining work begins. See our pipe relining cost page for more detail on what affects price.
Can all pipes be relined?
Most drain and sewer pipes can be relined if the pipe retains a suitable host shape and can be accessed properly. Severely collapsed sections may require excavation first. An inspection determines whether relining is appropriate for your specific pipe.
Is pipe relining suitable for strata properties?
Yes. Pipe relining is well suited to strata and managed properties where minimising disruption to common areas and residents is important. Drainr provides written scope and documentation suitable for strata decisions.
How does pipe relining compare with pipe replacement?
Where relining is suitable, it avoids the cost and disruption of excavation, reinstatement and landscaping restoration. See our pipe relining vs replacement page for a full comparison.
